WINTER HAVEN — Celebrations of joy and an almost collective sigh of relief washed over the crowd, as the sun set on the Class 1A-District 5 swimming meet, with many Dragons feeling the thrill of victory. Lake Placid crowned five district champions in the finals at the Rowdy Gaines Pool on Tuesday, as the men's team earned the overall title with 372 points, out scoring the Hardee Wildcats by 16 points, while the girls earned second (381) behind Lakeland Christian (436). "This team has been exceeding expectations all year long," LP head coach Cindy Rivers said. "This is a testament to the hard work that this team really has put in, not only during the season, but in the summer." ...more

WINTER HAVEN — Eat My Bubbles. That was a slogan written on the back of a Lakeland Christian swimmer, but it really should be a rallying cry for the Highlands County participants in the Class 1A-District 5 tournament. Avon Park and Lake Placid swim teams combined to qualify 36 swimmers for the upcoming Region 2 finals in the preliminary heats at Rowdy Gaines Pool on Tuesday. ...more

WINTER HAVEN — The Sebring High School swim and dive team competed in its last regular season meet on Tuesday against Lakeland, Lake Region, Kathleen, and Winter Haven. The Blue Streak girls first-place finish brought their season record to 41-1, while the boys first place gave them a 41-2 record for the regular season. In the 200-yard medley relay, Megan Wolfe, Paige Giller, Leeza Freeland, and Katie Bullard swam a 2:04.96 for first. The boys took both first and second as Matthew Vickers, Bryan Kirsch, Jason Parsons, and Shaanan Spiegel swam a 1:54.90, while Thomas Quigg, Brian Miller, Josh Heflin, and Rodney Havery swam a 2:01.94. ...more

LAKE PLACID – The Sebring girls swim team finished first on this weekend at the Heartland Invitational, a meet hosted by Lake Placid and featuring local teams from across the region. "The meet went great," said Green Dragon coach Cindy Rivers. "There was good competition and it was a close enough meet to keep it interesting." Sebring's girls took first with 592.5 points over Lake Placid in second with 566. Avon Park was fourth with 244 points and Hardee was a close fifth with 239.5. Lake Placid took second place among the boys with 424 points, followed by Sebring (415), Hardee (305) and Avon Park (172). Wildcat head coach Dick Daggett said the meet was good experience for all teams, especially with districts right around the corner. SEBRING –– Staying on course. The Sebring Blue Streaks swimming and diving teams improved their winning record to 18-0 for both the girls and the boys by defeating Lake Placid in a dual meet on Thursday at the Blue Streak pool. The Sebring girls finished first with 284 points, while Lake Placid had 249. The Blue Streak boys scored 251 to the Green Dragons 231. Sebring started out nicely, taking first and second in the girls 200-yard medley relay. Megan Wolfe, Paige Giller, Leeza Freeland, and Katie Bullard were first with a 2:05.94. Teammates Brittany Ricker, Katie Havery, Michelle Bash and Kristi Livingston swam a 2:13.73 for second. They were quickly followed by Lake Placid's Shelby Lambert, Chelsea Seignious, Marbelly Creel, and Tammie Beach with a 2:13.80. ...more
