SEBRING — Downtown Sebring has had three major commercial fires in three months, two of which destroyed buildings from the 1920s. Sebring Fire Chief Brad Batz said the wood structures of many of the city's older buildings can lead to large-scale fires. "The wood itself is not a fire hazard but if it is ignited, the old wood is so dry that it burns really hot and really fast," Batz said. The Jan. 17 fire that destroyed the assembly area of Park Place Truss, located at 454 Park St., is still under investigation. The building may have been the oldest structure in Sebring and was previously used as a lumber yard. ...more

SEBRING — Jason Gray was bragging on his fellow barbecuers Saturday afternoon. There was a fire in his Dominizer, a water chamber cooker. The grease pan ignited, and two flashovers flamed across the 6.5 foot high ceiling. It was moving too quickly to wait for the fire department. The entire trailer would have been involved, and the neighboring trailers would have been endangered too. Gray, a burly caterer from Wauchula who supplies weddings and small gatherings, shouted for help twice, and within seconds two fire extinguishers appeared on the serving counter of his 24-foot trailer. "They were just there, plop, plop," Gray said. He used up both, and yelled for another. A man handed him one. ...more

This is a response to the story about the gentleman responding to the article of the woman who was airlifted to Tampa following a stabbing in Avon Park. I believe that this gentleman is misinformed on some of his facts and I would like to set the record straight. First I will say that I am a nurse at Florida Hospital and am proud to work and serve my community. Our hospitals (in Sebring, Lake Placid and Wauchula) all are capable of handling most emergencies we face in Highlands County. We are able to handle most emergencies, but apparently not this woman's. She had sustained knife wounds, which could not be handled in Highlands County and the decision was made to get her somewhere quickly where she could get her wounds taken care of. ...more
