Tampa Bay Water is poised to provide for future needs as more people move to the area and demands continue to grow, the regional authority's general manager told Pasco County officials. Gerald Seeber, who addressed the board at a meeting this week in New Port Richey, said Tampa Bay Water has reduced groundwater pumping significantly since 2002, in part because of increased collections of surface water from rivers and better production at a desalination plant in Apollo Beach. ...more

For those who enjoy a classic Florida fish fry, it's time to think small. About the only species still abundant enough to allow for heavy harvest is freshwater panfish, but the good news is the state allows you to load the cooler with these little guys. Recent local newspaper articles jubilantly announced preliminary plans for ethanol to be produced by a plant just south of Lake Placid. Articles indicated the ethanol would be produced from sorghum cane that would be grown in southern Highlands County. They directed attention to the jobs that would be created by this program; however, no mention was made of the great amount of water needed to produce at least two crops of this sorghum per year and the four to five gallons of water required to produce each gallon of ethanol. ...more
