Enough is enough! My 401K is losing value by the minute. My future is anything but secure despite planning and saving. Thousands of people in Highlands County have no health insurance or access to routine health care. The food pantries in our county are out of food and people are hungry. Regarding "State Jurors Gain Power To Question" (front page, Jan. 4): Kudos to the Florida Supreme Court for allowing judges in criminal cases to permit jurors to submit questions when they believe they need to have an answer(s) that may be crucial to their ability to ascertain "reasonable doubt." By joining Arizona, Colorado, and Indiana in this practice, Florida has significantly advanced and improved the system of jurisprudence in Florida. The next step should be to mandate that judges allow vetted questions from a juror to be asked. ...more

Necessary Duplication 'Duplication of services,' 'efficiency' and other such buzz words are being used more and more by the development community in attempts to garner even greater benefits than they currently enjoy. For example, the article by Steve Allison ('Take Hard Look At County Planning,' Other Views, Sept. 22) uses the above words as reasons to change the current modus operandi of the Planning Commission. What Allison failed to state is that he is a land planner who makes his living by pushing projects through the system that is currently in place. ...more
