SEBRING — The U.S. House of Representatives was expected to approve on Wednesday $406,767 to build a new Highlands County Veterans Service Office, said Congressman Tim Mahoney. The funding was included in the Omnibus Appropriations bill, which passed the Senate Tuesday night. "It's great," said Harry Marsh, president of the Highlands County Veterans Council, a committee which reports to the Highlands County commissioners. "We've been expecting this. It's been an ongoing process." When he was elected a year ago, Mahoney committed to help get the money, and he delivered on the promise, Marsh said. Marsh believes the building will cost about $100,000 more than Congress appropriated, but the county commissioners are expected to provide the rest. ...more

SEBRING — Iraq War veteran Joshua Gdovin was pleased and a little surprised when a child greeted him with thanks at a Veterans Day ceremony at Veterans Beach on Monday. The Avon Park Battery "B" 3-116 Field Artillery National Guard member attended the ceremony on the shores of Lake Jackson, along with about 150 others, many dressed in uniform. "The kids came up and shook hands and I was so proud of what's going on," said the 22-year old who joined the service in 2003. "The more people here, the better." Like many with similar thoughts, Gdovin said he was moved to hear "Taps" played at the close of the ceremony. ...more

SEBRING — While the person giving the invocation to start the Highlands County Board of Commissioners meetings changes every week, one thing stays constant. Every meeting begins with expressions of gratitude to and prayers for the men and women serving in the military. At Tuesday's meeting, the commissioners will discuss a proposal to provide up to $900 per year in financial aid to military personnel from Highlands County serving in combat zones in the war on terrorism. Highlands County is likely to become the 14th county in the state to offer such aid through an exemption on property taxes or a stipend to help with expenses. ...more
