PETERSBURG - Gibbs High enjoyed what appeared to be the makings of a classic rout as it entered halftime of its homecoming game with 38 unanswered points against Pinellas Park in a Class 5A-District 9 matchup. The Patriots returned to the field with a gritty ground game that held the Gladiators scoreless in the second half, but were unable to bridge the first-half deficit as the Gladiators won 38-13. ...more

TALLAHASSEE - Florida State offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher is sticking with Xavier Lee at quarterback. But Saturday against Miami, Fisher hopes Lee plays like the QB who went 15 of 25 for 210 yards and two touchdowns in the first half of Thursday's 24-21 loss at Wake Forest, not the one who was nine of 20 for 73 yards and two interceptions in the second half. ...more

AVON PARK — "Everyone showed up but our girls." Those words leapt from a dejected Kim Crawford, who watched helplessly as her South Florida Community College volleyball team squandered its first chance at the playoffs since 1999, falling to St. Petersburg College in a three-set sweep (30-28, 30-24, 30-20) on Thursday. "I'm super disappointed in the way we played, or didn't play," Crawford said. "There was a buzz around campus for the first time. People painted their cars and we had the fans painted in the stands to cheer us on. "We had the perfect setting. If we win, we're in, and it was on our home floor with our home crowd. Everyone showed up except our girls." ...more

AVON PARK –– A complete role reversal. The Avon Park Red Devils girls volleyball team has come full circle this season from where they were at this point in '06. Not only are they playing better as a team, but they are putting teams away instead of letting them hang around, as the new look Red Devils dispatched the Sarasota Booker Tornados 25-7, 25-14, 25-18 in a Class 4A-District 10 match on Thursday. "It was good that we got this match done in three games," AP head coach Christie Hipps said. "Last year, this match would have went five games, but it was good experience for our girls. We got a big lead and it gave everyone a chance to play." ...more
