Have you ever heard of the Tri-County Theatrical Troupe? Well, neither had I, then I read a small write-up on them in the paper. Thankfully, there was a phone number for more information, which I called. Minister Robert Walker told me all about the troupe and what they were trying to do, which is to spread the work of God through drama, song and dance. SEBRING — Random drug testing started this year in the county's middle schools with only one student testing positive during the first semester. A reported 260 students were tested at the School Board of Highlands County's four middle schools with negative results (no drugs in their system) for 259 students and one student testing positive. "So that's pretty good," said Student Services Coordinator Patty Jackson. The students who are tested are picked randomly just as in the high school. Drug testing started at the high school level near the beginning of the 2006-07 school year with school officials confident that it would give students a reason to say "no" when offered drugs. SEBRING — To stay on course, Highlands County Sheriff Susan Benton held a four-hour strategic planning session Friday at the jury assembly room in the courthouse. The idea was to review the sheriff's existing three year strategic plan for 2006 to 2009, and to extend it out one more year to 2010. Benton's theme is: "Vision without action is only a dream, (but) vision with action can change the world." Crime statistics for most major crimes have been dropping, not just in Highlands County, but as a national trend, Benton said. ...more
