In response to the answer of my last letter written on Oct. 9, where I was offering a basic Spanish course to deputies of Highlands County, and my disappointment with Sheriff Benton when I had to wait five weeks to see her and on the day of the appointment I didn't get to see her anyway, Mayr Malool defended the sheriff by saying that the sheriff was busy trying to catch a cop killer. This is an absolute untruth. I was in Highlands County when that tragedy took place. There was no manhunt going on on the day I was supposed to see the sheriff. Maybe if he had known that, he might realize that the sheriff was busy trying to catch a cop killer. It is possible that his generous offer was somehow forgotten in the process. ...more

Avon Park's "Mile Long Mall" is the kind that is defined as "a public area often set with shade trees." Not the kind designed for shoppers. Although Larry did say that when he moved over from Wauchula back in 1958 the city had three department stores operating along the mall. When he moved here it was also "a time when all the buildings were occupied," he said with a touch of nostalgia in his voice. ...more
