U.S. EnviroFuels, LLC is developing Highlands County's first ethanol production plant using sweet sorghum as its primary feedstock. I was very disappointed in the May 29 letter to the editor by Charles Kendall in which Mr. Kendall claimed that our ethanol facility would be a major drain on the local water supply, and that it would require four to five gallons of water to produce each gallon of ethanol. ...more

Free Seminar Planned On Starting Small Business SEBRING — The Small Business Development Center of the Heartland will present a free seminar titled "Steps To Start A Small Business." It will be held Wednesday, May 28 at the Greater Sebring Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center, 227 U.S. 27 N., in Sebring from 2 to 4 p.m. The seminar will be taught by Bill McKown, certified business analyst with the SBDC. It is designed for persons thinking of starting a small business, or who have started a business, and want to make sure they did it correctly. LAKE PLACID — Highlands County farmers and gasoline consumers got estimates for the first time Thursday on the bottom-line economics for them if the proposed biofuels plant at U.S. 27 and State Road 70 is built. There was good news for farmers: Preliminary estimates are that they'll make well over $300, and probably between $400 to $500, per crop on every acre they commit to sweet sorghum production for the ethanol plant. ...more

Does the new bio-fuel plant they want to build in Venus use magic to turn sweet sorghum into ethanol? According to Bradley Krohn, this proposed plant will discharge "zero waste," make no noise, have no odor, use zero fossil fuels, and won't even discharge effluent from the bathrooms.
