America's educational system is a mess. We have students slipping through the cracks, failing to perform and flat out getting through without possessing the basic knowledge they need to succeed. It has become a tradition of sorts for each new president to address this issue with a nationalized plan for reform. Today's forecast has both good news and bad news, and since I always prefer the bad news first, you don't have a choice. The bad news is that today the moon is the furthest away from the earth, which means it has little or no effect on fish and wildlife. Fish will not be migrating in a predictable pattern to feed. Instead, they feed when their environment provides the best conditions to successfully find food. ...more

LAKE PLACID — Caladium farmers are smiling. Farmers pointed to more than a week of daily rains as favorable for the crop outlook and the August Caladium Festival, but cautioned that too much of good thing could become a negative. Carolyn Phypers, of Happiness Farms, said the caladium crop forecast is "looking pretty good." "The rain helped out," said Phypers. "If it doesn't drown them out, we'll be fine. Sometimes you can get too much rain, but we need the rain, so we can't complain." ...more
