SEBRING — Organizers for the third annual Veterans Day Parade in Sebring are looking for more groups to add their floats. Howard Jenkins, the veterans representative from Heartland Workforce and a chief organizer behind the parade, said that he has 30 floats committed so far for the Nov. 11 celebration. He said there was "plenty of time" to get more commitments for the floats. Last year, he estimated at least 3,000 spectators filled downtown Sebring to watch. Last year's parade had 63 floats, while the inaugural one hosted 44 entries. ...more

SEBRING – As he was lugging a projector, flip-chart easel and books from a class for entrepreneurs at South Florida Community College to his car, Bill McKown was lamenting how it would be nice to have the classroom close by. McKown, a certified business analyst with the Small Business Development Center of the Heartland, said he was thinking about the convenience of being able to stay in one location and "not have to lug stuff around." "The logistics would be so much simpler," he said. McKown is lamenting no more, as he and Bob Raymond, who is also a certified business analyst at the center, will be moving their business counseling operation from the Heartland Workforce One-Stop Career Center in Sebring to the college's Avon Park campus next month. ...more

SEBRING — Heartland Workforce will be hosting its second pre-holiday retail hiring event at the Highlands One-Stop Career Center on Monday, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring a resume and be appropriately dressed to interview for part-time and full-time seasonal work. Sales, customer service, cashier and food service positions will be available. The following employers have committed so far to take part in the job fair: Ross, Sebring Wal–Mart, Michaels, Wauchula Wal-Mart, Sears, Sebring Walgreens, Sebring Kmart, South Florida Community College, Bealls, All State-Jessica Hartline Insurance, Belks, Sunshine Staffing, Home Depot, Marshalls, Books A Million, Panera Bread, Big Lots, Cross Country Automotive Services, Quality Inn and Avon Park Correctional Institute. WAUCHULA – The Hardee County Economic Development Council, Hardee County Chamber of Commerce, Florida's Heartland Rural Economic Development Initiative and the Florida Foreign Trade Association will be hosting an exporting workshop Oct. 4 at the Heartland Workforce Hardee One-Stop Career Center from 8 to 11 a.m. The center is located at 205 Carlton St in Wauchula. The workshop is designed for company decision makers who are considering exporting or wanting to expand existing exports.
