SEBRING — Sebring coach Steve Ashley said the driving rain that soaked Firemen's Field in the first half of the Blue Streak girls soccer team's meeting with Palmetto on Thursday night didn't have much of an effect on the game. Junior Molly Blackman, on the other hand, gleefully disagreed. "It made it a lot more fun," Blackman said. "I think everyone enjoyed it." ...more

SEBRING — Rachel Ashley wasn't quite sure how to celebrate the first goal of her high school career. So, she scored another one. Using a new-look lineup and some familiar faces in different roles, the Sebring girls soccer team got two goals from Ashley in a 5-0 victory over DeSoto in Class 4A-District 10 action on Monday night. Ashley, who normally plays on defense, moved to forward and scored the first two goals of her prep career to push the Blue Streaks (4-3-2 overall, 3-2 district) to a winning record on the young season. ...more

SEBRING –– Friendly rivalries are healthy in the sports arena, but when the boundaries of good sportsmanship are crossed, anything can happen. What should have been Amanda Grimaldo's coming-out party turned ugly on Thursday, as a game-halting melee ensued in the 70th minute of Sebring's 5-0 win over Avon Park in a Class 4A-District 10 showdown at Firemen's Field. With the Blue Streaks up by four goals, an Avon Park and Sebring player got tangled up after going for the ball late in the match. One shove led to another, and after a punch to the jaw, the fight ensued. Both teams had players run on the field, as cheers from both sides could be heard over the commotion. "That is the last thing we need in a soccer match," Sebring goalie Becca Secory said. "I wasn't sure what had happened at first, but when I realized there was a fight, I tried to calm our bench down." ...more

PALMETTO – The Sebring Blue Streaks girls soccer team played a spirited first half against the defending Class 4A-District 10 champion Palmetto Tigers on Tuesday. Holding the Tigers to a single goal before the half, the Blue Streaks were feeling pretty good about their play in hostile territory, but a barrage of goals in the second half lifted Palmetto to a 6-0 win over Sebring. ...more

SEBRING — Amanda Grinaldo's three booming shots on goal in Sebring's season-opening loss to LaBelle didn't get the Blue Streaks on the scoreboard, but they certainly showed signs of the freshman's promise. Two days later, Grinaldo turned that promise into a Sebring victory against Lake Placid, pulling off her first career hat trick in her second start and lifting the Blue Streaks to a 3-2 victory over the Class 3A Green Dragons on Thursday at Firemen's Field. "That's what we expect out of our freshman," grinned Sebring senior captain Sadie Adams. The Streaks' three unanswered goals were all Grinaldo's: She broke behind the Lake Placid defense to score just before the half in the 36th minute, then booted the equalizer on a penalty kick in the 55th and put Sebring on top with a shot from point-blank range in the 75th. ...more

SEBRING — Like they were running in slow motion. The Sebring Blue Streaks girls soccer team opened their season in less than grand fashion, looking very sluggish and unable to shake off the rust against a very spry LaBelle Cowboys team in a 3-0 loss in the season opener at Firemen's Field on Tuesday. The Blue Streaks, who were without key player Heather McIntyre, were outhustled and outplayed from the opening whistle, unable to consistently break through the Cowboy midfield defense. ...more

SEBRING –– Forget about a gold watch for retirement –– Steve Ashley would rather watch goals. Especially those off the feet of his Sebring girls soccer team, which opens the winter sports season tonight when they host LaBelle at 7 p.m. on Firemen's Field. The Blue Streak coach, who retired form the Highlands County school board this past May, is looking forward to the season ahead, and he's not the only one in his household doing so: Senior Rachel Ashley returns to the pitch for her senior season after two years on the Blue Streak basketball team. ...more
