The Highlands County School Board needs to re-think taking sports programs out of the school system. As a parent I know how much sports means to kids in school. It's a real motivator for some kids to stay in school. Be real, school is not the most exciting thing to kids. It wasn't when I was in school and we didn't have all these tests to prepare for as they do today. But having a sports program made me and some of the kids today want to remain and do well in school. ...more

Highlands County School Board members, as well as school Superintendent Wally Cox and his staff, have worked hard to find cuts in the district's budget. Diminished revenue puts the squeeze on everyone. A comment tossed out during a recent meeting, however, caught a lot of attention. TAMPA PALMS - Family of Christ Lutheran Church and Christian School recently began making space for an Olympic-size soccer field on the church property at 16190 Bruce B. Downs Blvd. Trees have been trimmed and a silt fence has been put up where the field will go. The church is awaiting permits to begin tearing down trees. Volunteers will then work on completing the project. ...more
