A new beginning Beware the end is near and a new beginning is there for the taking for those who have a desire to change their way of living. There is a world of us who will be making our new year resolutions in hopes that we can change our lives for the better. For myself I have decided that I really need to reduce the size of my middle by at least two maybe three inches and that will require a lot of exercise an a fairly large decrease in the amount of money I spend on adult refreshments at my various hangouts. I just hope I do not cause any financial hardship for my business partners in the establishments I frequent. ...more

I have to agree with the "police bashing" letter from Jesse Sours concerning law enforcement driving too fast. Mr. Dowden claims he might be headed to someone's house to help. From what I've observed with the police, they probably hurt more lives than they help, especially in Highlands County. What police are really good for is hiding behind a bush and trying to catch some poor sap going a few miles over the speed limit. Then they pounce on you, insult you, write a ticket, you pay a fine, your insurance goes up, and then they go back to sitting around with their engines running, or off to the doughnut shop. ...more

SEBRING — Construction crews began work on Phase Two of the Sebring Parkway in July, doing mostly off-road work near Sebring High School. On Jan. 2, those construction crews will start the serious road building work, causing the complete shut-down of Eucalyptus Street, between Center and Grapefruit streets, for at least four and possibly as many as six months. This section of the parkway will replace the current two-lane Eucalyptus Street with a five-lane roadway with turning lanes. Phase Two of the parkway also will convert the current Highlands Avenue into a five-lane roadway, running all the way to U.S. 27. ...more

I would like to know why the police and sheriff's cars can go up U.S. 27 at about 60 or 65 mph when they don't have their emergency lights going? We cannot go over the speed limit without getting a ticket if we get pulled over, so why is it different for them? It is the same on Highlands Avenue, where the police and sheriff's cars hardly ever do the speed limit. Why, just because they wear the uniform is it okay for them to do what they want? They should obey the law like most of us do. ...more
