Palm Harbor University High School softball had made such a habit of qualifying for the postseason over the past decade that it seemed the Florida High School Athletic Association could probably just save time by slotting the Hurricanes in its 32-team bracket in February. Ten years in a row PHU made trips to the playoffs. Three of those runs ended with state titles. SEBRING — Two changes to the Highlands County Sports Complex are in the works and a third is planned but as of yet unfunded. On Saturday, Gordon and Mary Delp, whose specialty was their Philly cheeseteak at their former restaurant on South Commerce Avenue, will open up Park Place Snackbar & Grill at the sports complex. The Delps signed a one-year lease, with an option to renew it for up to four years, with the county to prepare and sell food at the sports complex. ...more

Class 6A-7 Gaither won the district title last season and returns the 2007 Tampa Tribune Hillsborough County Softball Player of the Year in pitcher Morgan Grove. Countryside advanced to regionals as the runner-up, but made it to the 6A state final four where the team lost to Miami Palmetto. Sickles will be led by Troy-bound pitcher Khrystyne Ely, who was a Tribune first-team selection as a junior. At a ceremony resplendent with the crimson and white colors of her future school, the Plant City High senior made official her commitment to play softball at the University of Alabama. GAINESVILLE The Florida High School Athletic Association Board of Directors approved a recommendation to discontinue the state fall soccer series immediately if 48 schools do not commit to participate in the event. AVON PARK — Heather Barnes is accustomed to wearing many hats. After all, the Avon Park senior is a star softball player, an outstanding diver and a top-notch student. Next year, however, Barnes will don a new hat altogether after signing a full scholarship on Thursday to play softball with the Stetson University Hatters. "It's an exciting time right now," Barnes said. "I got the paperwork last night and now its official. Now I can just concentrate on softball and beating Sebring.
