Reading the letter from Betty Prescott in the Nov. 4 edition of the Highlands Today only increased my feeling of gloom and despair about the way our country is speedily heading down the drain. I had heard the news about no Social Security increase for 2010. In the very next story, it was reported that Brother Obama has plans to send $7.5 billion in aid to Pakistan. ...more

The Democrats and a few R.I.N.O. Republicans are pushing hard to transform the health care system in this country into a European/Canadian system that is sure to provide less-than-quality care for all. We also will be taxed now for a health care system that won't be implemented until 2013. ...more

There has been a lot of discussion about the new health care reform bill before Congress and I would like to add my perspective. First I would like to agree with the conservatives that claim that this is a government intrusion into the private business of health care. Second, I would like to assert that this is a good thing, although I think this assertion is a matter of perspective. If you think Social Security is government intrusion into the retirement planning that we should do on our own, then you will hate this type of government action. If, however, you think we are a society that should and can provide for the health of all of our members then you will agree that this bill is long overdue. The simple issue is this: Do we as a society think it is our duty to make sure health care is available to all, or do we believe that those that want good health care should have planned better and gotten a career that provided health insurance for life and that those that didn't plan better, can simply die from lack of services brought on by their own lack of planning, or inability to get such a job? ...more

I have been on Social Security and Medicare for quite a few years now, and I can't see anything wrong with it as it is. So, why don't they leave it alone as it is and stop all of this hoopla about changing it? I had four stitches in my finger, 20 staples put in the back of my head, a trip to a heart doctor, etc., and they took care of me just fine. ...more

Attention seniors: For the first time in history there will not be an increase in the Social Security cost of living adjustment (COLA). There may not be any for the next three years. That does not mean your Social Security benefit will stay the same, it will decrease! Your Medicare premium will increase from $96.40 to $104.20 in 2010 and to $120.20 in 2011. Your part D cost will probably also increase. But Congress voted themselves a big raise, between $4,700 and $5,300. ...more
