CAPE CORAL — The Ida Baker High School mascot is "The Bulldogs," but after Friday's romp of Lake Placid, they might as well be "The Thieves." The host school picked the pockets of the Lake Placid basketball squad so much that they should have been handcuffed in downing the Green Dragons 70-43 in the opening round of the two-day Turkey Shootout on Friday. The loss had LP head coach Levi Williams shaking his head, knowing that his team didn't play at their best. "We're still trying to find what kind of team we have here," Williams said. "I keep telling these kids that they have to compete for the whole 32 minutes. You can't take quarters or even one play off. You have to come out and compete on every play." ...more

SEBRING — Balanced scoring and a tenacious defense paced Lake Placid to a 65-33 win over Moore Haven in boys basketball on Tuesday night in the Terrier's gym. Senior forward Conlin Veley scored a game-high 16 points, center Travalier Sholtz added 14 points and 10 rebounds and Josh Hickey chipped in with 10 points and six boards as the Class 3A Green Dragons improved to 1-0. ...more

AVON PARK — The division between prep and public schools was never more evident than during the opening of the Bill Jarrett Tip-Off Classic on Friday. The transition from football to basketball is still under way for the Lake Placid boys basketball team, which looked sluggish in the first half against a very fresh Pendleton squad en route to a 71-57 defeat. ...more

LAKE PLACID — With three returning starters and an infusion of young talent, the Lake Placid boys basketball team is hoping to improve on last year's 10-16 record. The Green Dragons lost in the Class 3A-District 10 finals to Frostproof and ended their season with a loss in the regional quarterfinals against state power Florida Air Academy. With the nucleus of junior Travalier Sholtz and seniors Josh Hickey and Conlin Veley — all of whom played football — Lake Placid could contend for a district title again this season. ...more

LAKE PLACID –– With an infusion of ability and talent, the Lake Placid girls basketball team plays its first home game of the season tonight against Walker Memorial Academy. The Green Dragons dropped their season opener against Clewiston by a score of 39-33 on Tuesday night, but LP coach Shonda Legree saw a lot of positives in the loss. "I was very pleased with our effort because we played hard and were competitive," the sixth-year Green Dragon coach said. "We had the lead until the third period when we ran into some foul trouble and Clewiston took advantage of that." ...more
