South Florida Community College's Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) chapter will hold the PTK 2008 Honors Seminar Series, "The Paradox of Affluence: Choices, Challenges, and Consequences," during the fall 2008 term. This series of four lectures will be broadcast live via satellite to SFCC as well as college campuses across the nation. Contemporary Christian musician Michael W. Smith will take center stage on Nov. 6 during Florida Hospital Heartland Division's 14th annual Gala Festivities at South Florida Community College. During an 18-year career, Smith has recorded 15 albums, which earned him two Grammy awards and 27 Dove awards. Smith was a member of former Gala performer Amy Grant's band, prior to branching out on his own. Smith's performance at the SFCC Auditorium is one portion of the hospital's fundraiser. A golf tournament, silent auction, black tie dinner, a children's art contest and a 5K walk/run are all Gala Week highlights. ...more

AVON PARK — Norm Stephens knows that in a recessionary economy, voters aren't likely to approve any suggestion of a tax increase. And in November, there will be nine ballot issues to confuse voters, including a one-cent sales tax which that would replace school property taxes. And furthermore, the 10-mill college property tax is No. 8 on the list, after the amendments prohibiting gay marriage and illegal aliens owning land. So its chances of passing may be small. But if voters approve in November, the Legislature would be required to allow the commissioners in Highlands, Hardee and DeSoto counties to hold a election which would generate property taxes to support South Florida Community College. "It's a four-step process," said Stephens, SFCC president. "It has to be approved by 60 percent of the voters in November. That allows the Legislature to develop rules. Then the counties can place it on the ballot, and the voters would have to approve again." ...more
