As anyone who knows anything about K-12 education realizes, a school with an indecisive or less-than-fully competent principal soon finds itself in a bad way. Principals who don't have good assistants, especially at the high school level, will have a hard time doing their jobs. Regarding "Terms In Divorce To Change" (Metro, Aug. 31): Removal of contentious words from divorce proceedings sounds like a good idea if you've never been through a divorce involving kids. Change the word "custody" to "shared-parental responsibility" and - poof! - an irresponsible parent becomes more responsible? It's ignorant to believe this. ...more

The Pasco County School District is building a high school in the Holiday area that is scheduled to open at the start of the 2009-10 school year. Since the school, per School District policy, is now known only as "High School FFF," it is going to need a less prosaic name. The district is asking the public for suggestions on what the school should be named. The School Board will have the final say on the naming. ...more

TARPON SPRINGS - The Police Department's small cadre of school-based officers has been recognized as best in the state by the Florida Association of School Resource Officers. The honor is especially sweet for Tarpon police, who lobbied to have their own officers patrol local schools. Other schools in the county have SROs from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. ...more
