Last year, 23-year-old Rashida Hill watched the presidential debates, visited the college political party meetings and put a Barack Obama bumper sticker on her townhouse door. She voted for Obama because she felt like the election was about "being a part of something." ...more

Although this past election didn't turn out as I desired for the country, I must say I was more pleased with the results in our local elections. The Brown-Waite and Schenck wins made me happy as did the almost-clean-sweep of the commissioners running for re-election. Good riddance to Chris Kingsley and Diane Rowden, no matter how they and their family members pout and call the voters names. ...more

8:30 a.m.: Mike Godwin stood out from the crowd at the First United Methodist Church in Lutz, or at least from the line. As people exited cars and scurried to the end of the line, Godwin kept away but always making sure he could be seen. That's because he was sporting a shirt with the name of Ed Homan, a Republican candidate for the state Legislature. He was at the poll on his own, not part of an organized effort by the campaign. ...more

John McCain, the Republican candidate, is fond of asking, Who is Barack Obama? Let's turn that question on him. Various media outlets and pundits talk about what an honorable man Sen. McCain is. I say evidence is quite to the contrary. ...more

I was attending a meeting of the Republican executive committee when Ron Grimming announced as a candidate for sheriff. The scope of his law enforcement background in conjunction with his leadership credentials essentially eliminated any other potential Republican candidate from announcing. It's unfortunate there was only one debate sponsored by Highlands Today. As the campaign unfolded, Ron has focused on the issues and is specific about what he will and will not do. For those of you who are not familiar with Ron, I encourage you to request literature from the Republican headquarters at 461 S. Commerce Ave, opposite the Courthouse, or phone 402-5456 to request information. ...more

Bill Bunting has decided destruction of Republican campaign signs has gone too far. Bunting, chairman of the Pasco County Republican Executive Committee, said the local party is offering a $1,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for defacing signs promoting presidential candidate John McCain, U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis or any other Republican candidate. The reward also can be collected for fingering vandals who target Republican homes. Bunting reported that someone spray painted Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's name, along with a vulgarity, on the Port Richey house of a McCain supporter. Pasco Democrats don't plan to offer any rewards, but they also are having a problem, though not with graffiti on houses. ...more
