AVON PARK — Ann Romney, the wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, is scheduled to be in downtown Sebring at 10 a.m. The public is invited, said Marvin Kahn, who arranged the meeting at Iris & Butterflies, 207 Circle Park Drive. "She specifically asked to meet women who are in business," said Kahn, the Highlands County co-chairman of Mitt Romney for President. Kahn, a Highlands County citrus grove owner, said he got a call last week from the state GOP that Ann Romney might stop in Sebring, so he quickly arranged the visit to the gift shop. ...more

AVON PARK — City Manager C.B. Shirey applied to be the Avon Park Executive Airport's manager Tuesday, a move that could force him to resign as the city manager if he were hired. The city council could hire him as early as Jan. 2 when they have their next meeting. If he is hired, Shirey might continue acting as the city manager until a replacement is found. Shirey announced his intentions Monday. Some council members became aware of Shirey's plans only the morning before the meeting. They would have hired Shirey that day, but Shirey did not complete the application until Tuesday. ...more

Should the superintendent of Highlands County Schools be elected or appointed? If you own or operate a local business (builder, Realtor, restaurant, etc.) If you are a practicing professional, if you depend on the growth and prosperity of our county for your livelihood, or you are a parent with children in our public schools, you should be concerned that some of our local public schools have consistently been graded D schools. Do potential new residents decide not to locate in Highlands County because of the reputation (deserved or not) of some of our schools? Have businesses that could provide quality jobs to our area decided not to locate in Highlands County fearing that they could not attract qualified employees (with school aged children) because of the reputation of some of our public schools? ...more
