NEWS AND NOTES Hillsborough County's 2008 track schedule has a major scheduling conflict. The annual Nash Higgins Relays at Leto - a meet all of the county's public schools are required to attend - is slated for March 1, the same day as the Steak n Shake Invitational at USF. According to Wharton track coach Wes Newton, who has spearheaded hosting the Steak n Shake meet the past several years, March 1 was the only date available for the event. For any number of reasons - none the least of which is that Leto features an unforgiving asphalt track measured in yards - Newton says he would prefer sending his team to the USF meet. He also would prefer the competition at Steak n Shake, which would come from across the state. ...more

Last week at Sebring High School, my son was involved in a terrible situation. A theft took place and my son was set up by another student, who accused him of being involved. I am writing this letter to tell how wonderful the staff at Sebring High School is. When I received the news about the situation I was furious. I started to call the high school to find out exactly what happened. It was after 3 p.m. and school was out. I spoke to several personnel on campus and left a couple of messages to contact me the next day. Well, I was totally shocked when this one gentleman called me at my home at 7:30 p.m. We spoke about the situation for approximately 30 minutes, at which time, he explained to me what had happened, and he knew that I was upset with the way it was handled. ...more
