I refer to the article by Leonard Pitts, "We've Lost Sight of Christ's Love," printed in the Tampa Tribune on May 1. After reading the article carefully, I conclude that Mr. Pitts agrees with James Lawson, that modern Christianity is wrong in opposing a certain "alternate lifestyle" so vehemently. I also am displeased with much of "modern Christianity." I prefer what I would call "old fashioned Christianity." At the same time, I oppose the premise that Christians are the only ones who dare not protest what they are firmly convinced is sin! ...more

SEBRING — Suspending impact fees is just one of the ideas Highlands County Commissioner Guy Maxcy will propose for a "stimulus package" to jump-start the county's stalled economy. Since Maxcy first proposed suspending both impact fees and building permit fees to get the struggling construction industry going again, people have been giving him additional ideas. At least four of those ideas will be added to Maxcy's plans to suspend impact and building permit fees when he officially presents his "stimulus package" to the county commission. Maxcy said Monday he will ask Edgar Stokes, the chairman of the county commissioners, to schedule his proposed stimulus package as a discussion item at the March 4 commissioners meeting. ...more

I voted in Florida's presidential primary, and I voted angry. I was angry at the move by both parties to devalue the input of Florida's voters. But I was - and still am - even angrier at the candidates running for office who made public statements to the effect that Florida has no role to play in the selection process. ...more

Several editorials in the Highlands Today have come out against the Florida Hometown Democracy ballot proposal. That is unfortunate, but not surprising, as a newspaper is a "business" and depends upon the number of paid subscribers it has. The more people moving into the newspaper's area, the better chance there is to increase sales. This may be called the "gold" factor. I call it the "greed" factor. ...more
