VENUS — Along an isolated road near the Highlands-Glades county line, a single-engine plane with Iraqi Air Force insignia was grounded Wednesday afternoon. Doug Oliver, a spokesman for Cessna Aircraft Company in Wichita, Kan., confirmed that the plane, a Cessna 172 Skyhawk, is a basic training aircraft intended for sale to the Iraqi Air Force. AVON PARK — Wanting to experience in person the artwork they have been studying, the South Florida Community College Art Club members are heading to New York City this winter. But first the 14 students have to raise some money to make the $6,000 trip possible. Although they have done several fundraisers this year, their most popular one is coming up this week - the all you can eat soup bowl lunch. "Everyone around campus is really excited about it and looking forward to it," said Laura Wolfe, art club president. "They keep asking when it will be, so we are glad to have that support." ...more

SEBRING — Thursday's grand opening of the Highlands Regional Wound Care Center was a chance for partners Highlands Regional Medical Center and Florida -based National Healing Corporation to show off the new 1,800-square-foot facility. Converted from former surgical suites, the spacious wound center features four treatment rooms and two hyperbaric oxygen chambers. More than 100 well-wishers attended the opening and received guided tours. The center at 7200 S. George Blvd. underwent $300,000 worth of renovations and offers state-of-the-art specialized wound healing care, especially for diabetics. ...more
