Lost Without The GPS This past weekend, the PW and I spent an awful amount of time learning how to get around on the streets of an unfamiliar location without our navigation device. We were in the Ellenton area where the tanker truck destroyed the bridge over State Road 301 on the southbound lanes of Interstate 75 last week. Our motel was located in the Prime Outlets Mall area, within a half mile of the accident. Thank goodness we had a few friends who were familiar with the area and gave us maps to use to get around most of the congestion. Even so, it was impossible not to get into some standstill traffic jams. But before we left Sunday morning, the authorities had devised routes and some rerouting of traffic, which made traffic flow almost normally. ...more

Pave Bailey Hill Road As a resident of the Bailey Hill Road area, I am becoming increasingly concerned that Bailey Hill Road will never get paved. An MSBU was informally asked for, but we were told by the county "why pave it under the MSBU when it will be paved with impact fee money." Time has passed and we still see no progress in it being paved. ...more

A man biking under an Interstate 4 overpass saw something he didn't expect early this morning: a car flying over his head. The 1993 Chevrolet Camaro was traveling east on Interstate 4 near 21st Street about 2:15 a.m., when it crashed through a guardrail and vaulted over the overpass embankment, the Florida Highway Patrol said. ...more

TAMPA -- A 29-year-old man pleaded guilty to two federal charges of murder in racketeering, relating to the 1998 death of two homeless men, U.S. Attorney's Office officials announced today. Charles Marovskis, formerly of Tampa, is the second man who has pleaded guilty in the case. Kenneth Hoover, 35, pleaded guilty to the same charges on March 7, 2007. ...more
