It seems to me that Barbara Stewart and Jeff Carlson are still vindictive and vengeful in spirit against the Highlands County Sheriff and her department. Reading in the paper today of the vote they cast, I just wonder if they did they get a raise? Did they refuse it or give it to a needy cause? ...more

In reference to Mr. Gates Sr's. letter, "So LongIllegals," he blames it all on just the Democratic Party. Why not start with your city and county to send illegals packing? I believe this is a majority Republican-held commission, a council that permits illegal workers to abound here. Small and big businesses use illegals. Calls go unanswered when child labor practices are reported. They are just told it ain't happening without checking. Some of our own local elected officials need to be looked at about their own personal agenda. ...more

Wish you could have gone to the Super Bowl? Technically, you could have. Bank of America, a recipient of part of the $700 billion bailout funded by taxpayers like you and me, spent an estimated $20 million sending its corporate executives to the big game. It included a $3.5 million pre-game festivity, tickets to the game (in a private corporation box. complete with food and wet bar) and an estimated $10 million post game party. They would not release the names of any of the employees who attended, and said that they were not required to do so because they are a sponsor of the NFL. Meanwhile, G.M., another NFL sponsor, said that none of their employees attended the game. Maybe that's why they only asked for $35 billion! ...more

Debra Saunders had an opinion in Highlands Today on Jan. 30, about the use of medical marijuana, but took it to a higher level. I have in my opinion not seen an article worthy of print from Saunders to date! She did, however, get one comment right, (some doctors) give "THC" properties. ...more

I read in the paper about the ethanol plant or possible plants coming to Highlands County. This can be a most wonderful opportunity for the county, state, American citizens, real estate sales, businesses large and small alike. Since our tax dollars are in part funding this program, there should be in no way anyone working either on the building project or in the plant itself not be a United States citizen. Our commissioners, state representative, Congress, Senate and governor should see that our people are ready to take these jobs. ...more

On Friday, Dec. 19 I read where Jeff Carlson opposes the new sheriff's building, which most people, I think, know we need now. It's not a project that is speculative at best. I must ask, does Mr. Carlson have a personal interest in the Sebring Parkway project with so many other open areas for growth? Is the water and sewer, if installed, suitable for only the sheriff's building, or could it benefit infrastructure as well? As Mr. Youngman wrote in his letter on Dec. 18, we as a county have to assure that no illegal aliens are working in our county. ...more
