Could it be true that the Republican Party is intentionally committing suicide? That's what a lot of folks are saying and some Republicans are crying foul. A culture war is raging within the party, and a lot of good people are being booted. Who benefits? The Democrats, of course, but other consequences also could result. ...more

University of Florida's outstanding linebacker Brandon Spikes apparently didn't like a Georgia running back in last Saturday's game. He decided to try to claw his eyes out during a tackle. He failed in that, thank goodness, but did succeed in getting a suspension for his deed. As far as suspensions go, though, he barely received a slap on the wrist. ...more

Politics are a lot like sports, and there's not much difference between fans and political supporters. Sometimes in the zeal of supporting their team or candidate, they can be downright silly - and mean. That's going on at the national and local levels. ...more

In a presidential election year where both sides claim to be candidates for change, there's little new in the nastiness of the campaign. Comments concerning "lipstick on a pig" are being thrown around as if one of the candidates just stated he would declare war on North Korea if elected. It's ridiculous, and too many people are being whipped into a frenzy over it. ...more

Anyone who thought Sen. Barack Obama was getting a free ride in his quest for the White House needs to think again. His Democratic rival, Sen. Hillary Clinton, along with many Republicans, have started the mudslinging and body blows. That's because they are scared of the man who seems to be generating interest across party lines and throughout the country. Clinton stomped her feet and cried foul about something Obama said concerning her support for NAFTA in the 1990s. He said that as first lady, when her husband was a big promoter of free trade, that she also supported it. For some reason his statement enrages her now. That's strange, because she never mentioned anything against NAFTA before. ...more

It should not be difficult to understand the shock wave that reverberated through the Democratic universe when the Republicans gained complete control of the 105{+t}{+h} Congress (1995-97). Republicans remained in majority until the end of the Clinton presidency. (But they never had a bullet proof majority in the Senate.) ...more

Chief Magnetic Field Stephin Merritt wasn't kidding when he named this album "Distortion." The first seconds of the album could be a 1985 Jesus and Mary Chain outtake and the rest sounds as if the JAMC's "Psychocandy" album might be spinning idly in the background. ...more

A local political spokesperson said the reason there are so many people listed as independent voters these days is due to motor vehicle registrations, when people don't know what to put down for party affiliation. That's partially true, but there's something much bigger going on that neither major party seems to grasp. People are tired of the candidates they elect being so out of touch with their needs. During campaigns, these politicians seem all ears on the issues of the day. They talk about the problems, offer multiple-point plans on how to address then. Then, once elected, nothing is improved and special interests always hold much more sway than constituents. It's no wonder so many people are dropping party affiliations and becoming independents. ...more
