SEBRING — Yeah, yeah, yeah. Spring forward, fall back. We all get an extra hour of sleep. But some folks, like Richard Duvigneaud, would be more pleased if the federal government would just quit fooling around with the time. "Since you asked, I detest Daylight-Savings Time," said Duvigneaud, of Sebring. "It adds more time to peoples' evenings in summer, where it should stay. "The extension to daylight-savings time is ridiculous," he said. Starting in 2007, the federal Energy Policy Act extended DST a month, beginning on the second Sunday in March and ending on the first Sunday in November, instead of the last Sunday in October. ...more

SEBRING — Don't be surprised if you see more shaved heads than usual in Highlands County schools. It's all for a good cause. Five principals and teachers wanted to show support for Kindergarten Learning Center Dean "Mr. K" Rick Kogelschatz who has cancer. So they decided to shear their locks. Kogelschatz had a kidney transplant about 1½ years ago. During the summer he was treated for testicular cancer, which spread to a lung for which he is currently receiving chemotherapy. His fellow faculty and students from three schools, who've been associated with him as a teacher and dean, have tried to bolster Kogelschatz's spirits. ...more

AVON PARK — Jose Gonzales doesn't know who could have spray painted racial slurs on his house and set fire to his garage and car. "I can't sleep," he said Monday afternoon. "I don't know who did this." State Fire Marshal Public Information Officer Kevin Shireman said the fire was intentionally set and a cash reward of up to $2,500 is being offered for information.
