SEBRING –– Playing as a well-honed team, the talented duo of Blake Liles and Vince Liles carded five birdies en route to a 76 to win the Boys First Flight in Sunday's Sertoma Junior Golf Tour's adult/child tournament. The opening event of the Sertoma Junior Tour's summer season attracted a field of 82 players, who competed in an alternate-shot format over 18 holes of the demanding Turtle Run course at Sun 'N Lake Country Club. Placing second in the First Flight was the duo of Russ Rudd and Clay Davis with a 78, while Joel Walkup and Colin Walkup came in third with an 83. Zach Walkup and Aaron Walkup finished fourth with an 86, and Jason Silva and Kim Darrow claimed fifth with an 89. ...more

SEBRING — Sebring Golf Course will now offer nine-hole play to appease disabled veterans and senior citizens who say that's all they can play. Robert Burdick, a disabled veteran, spearheaded the effort; he played regularly at Sebring Golf Course, previously known as the Sebring Municipal Golf Course, and was recently told he could no longer pay a nine-hole rate. ...more

SEBRING –– With the school days dwindling down, thoughts of summer recreation activities come to mind. For junior golfers in the Heartland, the best place to be is participating on the Sertoma Junior Golf Tour. The popular tour, which was the brainchild of former Sebring Golf Club professional Tom McClurg, is beginning its 14th season with Sun 'N Lake assistant professional Andy Kesling beginning his second year as Sertoma Junior Golf Tour director. The weekly tournaments usually attract between 50-75 youngsters, ages 6-18, and Kesling is hoping that even more junior golfers come out this year. "We are looking forward to the summer," said the affable Kesling. SEBRING –– Another familiar face is exiting the Heartland golf scene. Colin Moffat, who has been the head professional at Golf Hammock Country Club for the past four years, has taken a position as the Director of Golf at Indian Lakes Estates Country Club in Polk County. "This is an opportunity that I couldn't pass up," said Moffat. "I'm kind of sad because I've enjoyed my time at Golf Hammock immensely, because the members are fine people and have always given me great support, but I just feel like the time is right for me to move on. "Indian Lakes Estates Country Club is a very nice layout, and I was up there last week and met more than 300 people, and I look forward to the challenges that are ahead of me." ...more

SEBRING –– The second year of the Players Club Golf Tour is at hand and the first tournament of the season is set for March 15 at Sebring Golf Club. The brainchild of former Sebring Golf Club professional Tom McClurg (who left the Heartland in December to take a job as Director of Golf at Chula Vista Golf Resort in the Dells, Wis.) the Players Club Tour will be run by River Greens golf course professional Jason Beatty. "Tom started these events to give the local players a chance to compete in individual tournaments on Saturdays over the course of the year," Beatty said. "I'm looking forward to the first tournament, and I hope a lot of the local golfers take advantage of this opportunity." A $75 membership fee is required to play in the tournaments. ...more

SEBRING — Maybe Tom McClurg doesn't know it snows in Wisconsin. The affable Sebring Golf Club professional has decided to leave the Heartland to take over as Director of Golf at Chula Vista Golf Resort at the Dells in Wisconsin. McClurg's last day is on Dec. 27 and the new year will bring new challenges for the well-known and respected professional. "I'm looking forward to going up to the Dells because it's a resort town," McClurg said. "It's beautiful up there and it has all the amenities of of a big city without all the crime and traffic." The Chula Vista Resort, which is in central Wisconsin, offers 18 holes of golf at its Cold Water Canyon layout and an adjacent 2,500 room hotel. ...more

SEBRING — It won't take long for Kim Darrow to remember the names of members at Sebring Golf Club. Darrow, who honed her golf game as a youngster under the watchful eye of Sebring Golf Club professional Tom McClurg, was named as the assistant pro at the venerable club on Tuesday. Darrow, whose maiden name is Best, played on the boys golf team and graduated from Avon Park in 1998, and is thrilled to be back in the Heartland and involved in golf. "I'm so excited to be back home and getting a chance to learn the golf business from Tom," the 27-year-old said. "I practiced here when I was a kid and worked in the pro shop when I was in high school, so I know a lot of people that play here. "I respect Tom so much, and I'm motivated to learn everything I can. And I can't think of a better person to work with." ...more
