After getting blanked by Sebring on Tuesday night, the Lake Placid girls volleyball team rebounded in a big way by beating Frostproof 25-13, 25-16, 25-13 in the consolation final of the Preseason Classic on Thursday night in the Blue Streak gym. ...more

The trophy case at Lake Placid High School has become a crowded place in the wake of the volleyball team's recent success, but head coach Marilyn Jones still scoffs at the notion that her Green Dragons are building a dynasty. ...more

The popular Iamgo Gallery on Douglas Avenue was the creative workplace for Marilyn Jones and 14 other artists. On Dec. 9, 2007, the gallery was gutted by a fire of suspicious origin. "I remember standing in front of it in total shock," Jones recalled. "You could see right through it. I went home and just cried." ...more

LAKE PLACID — Marilyn Jones just shook her head, smiled and wondered aloud when she'd see her team play a complete game this season. "They hit the ball for one inning and then take the rest of the game off," said the LP head coach, who watched her Green Dragons fall 13-3 to All-Saints Academy in a six-inning mercy-rule game on Friday. Lake Placid has struggled all season with consistency at the plate and in the field, but they've managed to show glimpses of the potential that their coach knows they have. "We've got some talent out there," Jones said. "We just have a hard time pulling all that talent together, and we always seem to hang our heads once we dig ourselves into a hole." That hole came in the first inning, when a pair of errors in the infield turned into four runs, including a three-run bomb over the left-field fence by Ashton Brice that gave the Saints a 4-0 lead just moments into the game. ...more

Terriers Chew Up Green Dragons MOORE HAVEN — Maribel Garza scored on a fielder's choice to give the visiting Green Dragons a two-run advantage, but the Moore Haven Terriers responded with a flurry of runs over the next four innings to pummel Lake Placid 12-2 in the 10-run mercy-rule, five-inning affair. ...more

LAKE PLACID — A constant state of rebuilding has been the blueprint for the Lake Placid softball team over the past few years, and head coach Marilyn Jones knows all too well the reasons why. ...more

LAKE PLACID — Lee Tolar shook his head in awe of his girls' performance, and summed up his Sebring softball team in a nutshell. "We're only going to get better," the Blue Streak skipper said. Sebring, who methodically dismantled a gutsy Lake Placid squad in a 15-1 mercy-rule victory on Thursday, is already playing at a tournament level, and they're doing it without three key members of the team (Priscilla Adams, Chelsea Davis and Hannah Shoop). "It's nice to see that we're not getting off to a slow start," Tolar said. "These girls were just ready to play tonight. They're tired of practice and wanted to play. "We're hitting well, playing solid defense. Everything is on course, but we've got a good test in Frostproof coming up. We're just ready to go." ...more

SEBRING — Three Blue Streaks scored in double figures on Friday night to lead the Sebring boys basketball team to a 73-42 victory over LaBelle in the Streaks' final regular season game. Chris Grubb had 14 points, T.J. Williams had 13 and Sam Robinson added 11 in Sebring's final tune-up before the district tournament, which begins Tuesday at Palmetto. "We didn't play well at first, but we switched some things up and forced some turnovers," said Sebring coach Princeton Harris. "Our biggest thing now is staying humble — we haven't won anything yet." ...more

LAKE PLACID –– Kristen Massung doesn't mince words when describing how far she's come on the volleyball court. Looking back at her game three years ago, when she first seriously committed to volleyball, the Lake Placid senior is rather blunt in her assessment. "When I first started, I wasn't that good," said Massung, whose powerful hits and uncanny ability to block led the Green Dragons to their third straight district title this season. "But I got a lot better." No arguments here. For her quiet leadership and game-changing presence on defense, Massung was a unanimous choice as the Highlands Today's volleyball player of the year. ...more

LAKE PLACID — An exciting season of blocks, sets and spikes came to an end for the Lake Placid volleyball team on Tuesday night. The Green Dragons played well, but ultimately the height and firepower of John Carroll (Fort Pierce) proved too much, as the Golden Rams swept past Lake Placid, 25-16, 25-16, 25-15 in a Class 3A regional quarterfinal match. "I'm proud of the girls because they played hard every point and gave it all they had," Green Dragon coach Marilyn Jones said. "John Carroll is a good team and their quick serves and sets gave us fits. "We had trouble with our serving tonight and you can't make those kind of mistakes against good teams and expect to win." John Carroll, which improved to 17-11 on the season, used the strong serving and sets of Libero, Kelsey Bona, and the dynamic combination of senior outside hitters, Crystal Bell and Aubrey Parker, to hold off a determined effort by Lake Placid. ...more
