SEBRING – Just three months ago, Highlands County's gain of Mandy Hines as the new director of the housing department was Desoto County government's loss. This week, though, DeSoto County turned the tables on Highlands and hired Hines back. On Monday, Hines told her boss, Jim Polatty, director of development services, that she will be leaving to accept a job with DeSoto County. Hines, who has not yet submitted a letter of resignation, is leaving her job here to return home and accept a higher-level, higher-paying job, Polatty said. ...more

SEBRING — Joseph Paul Graham reportedly admitted to shooting Samuel Tiller, 82, at his Falcon Avenue home on Nov. 24, according to arrest reports provided by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office. Graham, 18, of 3806 Leeway Court, Sebring, was arrested on Tuesday, along with Gerald Sanders, 18, of 243 Mandy Circle, Sebring, and Nick Mezie, 17, formerly of Sebring, in connection to Tiller's death. All three suspects were charged with first-degree murder. A representative at Sebring High School confirmed Friday that Graham and Sanders are enrolled as students at the school. Arrest reports indicate that the trio broke into Tiller's residence around 4 a.m. by breaking a window on the north side of the home. Reports state that one of the suspects used the window opening to gain access to the home, then opened the front door of the residence for the other two suspects. ...more

SEBRING — The Highlands County Sheriff's Office resumed its search at the county landfill Thursday morning for a discarded baby. Investigators were in their third day of searching the landfill for a possible fetus or full-term baby thrown out by a 24-year-old Lake Placid woman after she had it about 1 a.m. Friday in her home. Sheriff Susan Benton said about 9 a.m. Thursday that deputies were having a briefing on the case and establishing a work order for the day. Fresh cadaver search dogs from other counties are arriving to aid in the search, she said. By 11:30 a.m. investigators were regrouping and "taking a new approach," Benton said. "They're going to be moving the garbage to a clean area to be going through it by hand." Benton said at the very least it is a misdemeanor to dispose of human remains in this manner, however it could range from a misdemeanor to a felony, depending on what is found. ...more
