Arguably the least expensive accommodations you can find on a vacation are "free," in someone else's home. Instead of laying out cash, your "payment" is in providing reciprocal benefits in your own home. Although home exchange sounds enticing, however, you have to carefully consider the plusses and minuses. And as with the proverbial, "lunch," home exchange isn't truly "free," because you face a few cash costs and a few more non-cash costs. But it's still about as inexpensive as you can find. ...more

Tuesday was one of those rush rush days, I hadn't planned on going to Sebring Animal Hospital, but my husband noticed our dog only had one of his daily medications left, so he wanted me to call and make arrangements to get more. I called but rather than telling Van, my husband, I figured I could go by and pick it up myself since Van had a cold. So I fill out a check and into the car I jump already running late. I walk using a crutch so as I bounce out of the car to make a fast trip into the animal hospital, I dropped my purse and I said a few words I shouldn't have. Using the crutch as a prop I bend over and grab the purse. I get the medication, hand the lady the check and make a bee line back to car. ...more

I have a solution for the school district's problem with chronically deviant students whose parents do not respond to suspensions. As an assistant principal and principal, I employed a policy in the Buffalo, N.Y., public high schools that we developed because we could not contact parents or guardians for recalcitrant, deviant students. Also we used this procedure with students whose parents, once found, were worse than the students. ...more
