SEBRING — A dryer fire call to 332 Spring Lake Blvd., in Sebring, was answered by the Lorida and DeSoto City volunteer fire departments at about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday. The fire was put out immediately, said Lorida Assistant Chief Swen Swenson on Thursday. The fire was contained to the garage area and no one was injured, he said. When firefighters arrived they pulled the dryer outside and began ventilating the home, which sustained some smoke damage. By 3 a.m. American Red Cross volunteers arrived to help the family of seven. An American Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteer with the office in Highlands arrived to provide help for the family of five adults and two children. The Red Cross was able to provide temporary shelter, emergency assistance for groceries, comfort kits (hygiene kits), teddy bears to help comfort the children and odor-control concentrated cleaner to help salvage items in the home. ...more

Today begins the second day after the new moon, which occurred on Friday at 11:03 p.m. The projection isn't any better today than it was last Wednesday, I'm sorry to say. So, read it and weep –– if you're a daytime angler. There is a very slight, very early, migration bite in areas known to have a high concentration of fish. The majority of fish stopped feeding four hours before and gorged themselves completely from midnight to 4 a.m. There might be a midday bite, but only the smaller fish will be participating, and very rarely a larger fish. A spawning female bass could be caught, but only if you've won the lottery in the last 2 years. ...more

I think most Americans feel a little zing of pride when a Nobel Prize goes to an American. Kind of like when your favorite reporter wins a Pulitzer or our athletes win gold at the Olympics. Therefore, I was struck at the negative coverage of Al Gore becoming a laureate. Suddenly the Nobel committee has ulterior motives and an anti Bush agenda. Your paper published three editorial cartoons on the same day ridiculing the award and Mr. Gore, sandwiched between two over the top columns debunking global warming claims and Mr. Gore's involvement. Whether one believes that global warming is a crises or snake oil, the point is that this accomplished American embittered by losing an election picked himself up and became the front man for a cause. He took his message to the world, friend and foe alike, and the world listened, even though America's image has been shattered by other events in recent years. ...more

SEBRING — Nothing against chain restaurants. Olive Garden is hotly anticipated, Panera is a welcome addition, and the RoadHouse Grill continues to be popular. But local restaurants are unique, and they offer variety that's not found in national chains. For Flor Becker, it's all about the roast duck with special sauce at the Thai House. And the laab kai salad, which is minced chicken with lime juice and spices. "We like Thai cuisine a lot," said Becker, who lives with her family in downtown Sebring. "At our office, we have a Thai Thursday, where all staff eat together for lunch." Becker, a Filipino who's used to Asian cooking, said Thai dishes are like Chinese food, some are hot, some not. ...more
