A small group of musicians sat in the shade of a recreational vehicle this afternoon, picking, grinning, singing and talking as a stream of people entered the Thanksgiving Bluegrass Festival at Sertoma Youth Ranch. Beside banjo player Bill Rich was his daughter, Amy, on fiddle, and son, Nathan, on acoustic guitar. Family friend Jim Waldeck joined on a second six-string. Bill and Nathan Rich and Waldeck are from West Palm Beach; Amy Rich lives in Nashville. The ensemble went from one song to the next with the relaxed precision of an experienced quartet. In regard to the recent editorials about the need to raise taxes on cigarettes being necessary to help pay medical expenses, as well as help deter adolescents from smoking I can only say, "Give me a break!" If people, especially politicians, really cared about the health of our young people as well as saving others from the diseases associated with smoking, they would stop tobacco companies from manufacturing their deadly product. But, because of all the money they get in payola from these despicable corporations, it will never happen. It is a proven fact that tobacco use kills, and that these tobacco companies actually add nicotine to the cigarettes to ensure addiction. But Congress does nothing, and people keep dying. ...more

The last engine has shut down and most of the transports have pulled out. The Sebring Historic Fall Classic is over, and not but a memory. This weekend's events are now cataloged in my mind as the newest of thousands of memories from Sebring Raceway. It's a special place to me, and not just because of the cars, but because of some of the colorful people you meet. This race, like so many others, was spent enjoying time with family. ...more
