According to Gary Ritter, director of South Florida Water Management District, SLID is responsible for the water management system for Spring Lake, including the golf course. So if that is the case, there is no reason for SLID to buy the golf course. The current owner has stated SLID has every legal right to clear the water ways. They have an easement, he stated, at the meeting last Wednesday. If SLID buys the golf course for $3.4 million, how much more is it going to cost to clean out the ponds, canals and lakes? All the SLID board members have talked about is buying the golf course. How is this going to fix the problem without dredging the water ways? ...more

It seems that lately I've missed mentioning some of the more significant events of our year. Like: I totally forgot to warn everyone to prepare themselves for last week's Friday the 13th. Then there was spring that got here yesterday. Another item I almost forgot to mention was the big race; the 12 Hours of Sebring. I'm not sure if there is anyone at the track who is reading this column today, but they may well take it home so I'll offer, "Welcome race fans have a safe trip home." Then in last week's column I left out any reference to St. Patrick's Day, a day that has extra meaning for me because it's the anniversary of my introduction to the military. Traditionally we once made it a point to show up on the steps of Takis' Restaurant on March 17 to have some of Mama's distinctively flavorful corned beef and cabbage. Of course that was before the couple retired. Then we just kind of forgot about tradition. But as luck would have it we saw Caddyshack's ad in the paper for corned beef and cabbage to be served on the saint's day. ...more

Our economy is collapsing around us. We have a spend-thrift, empty suit lawyer in the White House who doesn't have a clue how to fix anything except throw money. Nancy is running the show racking up deficits beyond anyone's imagination with a congress whose religion and ticket to heaven is pork. As the country gallops full tilt to socialism, Highlands Today sees fit to pick on Rush Limbaugh in a full blown editorial piece because he says "whacky" things. Politically, you can agree or disagree with Rush. However, the man should not be demonized because he disagrees with the way our country is being run. Most of his severe critics, and probably you as well, have never listened to Rush, for if you had, you would know he is anything but "whacky." Rush is a Reagan conservative and the Republicans need more like him. ...more
