For the next three days, you can forget about getting out on the lake early. Instead, spend time preparing for a mid- to late-afternoon bite. This is the week where you get out of bed early to set up the boat, rig up your gear and jump in the tow vehicle when you get out of work and be on the lake just as the bite starts. Since the last quarter moon on last Saturday, the early morning bite steadily decreased and the beginnings of a late afternoon bite formed. Now, with the recent semi-cold front that came into our area Monday night, the already formed late-day feeding migration will increase in duration and intensity. SEBRING — When you live in Florida and love the water, swimming in competitive events is never out of season. The Highlands Hurricanes winter swim team made quite a splash in last Saturday's St. Petersburg Aquatics Morning at the Races event. Former Sebring High swimmer Sean Spiegel won the 50-yard freestyle event with a time of 20.91 seconds to qualify for the 2007 USA Short Course National Championships, which will be held next Wednesday at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga. "That's quite an accomplishment for Sean," said Hurricanes coach Marvin Wolfe. "His goal is to qualify for the Olympic Trials next June and he is working hard toward that goal." ...more

My husband and I are school bus drivers for the Sebring School District. We have been fortunate enough to have driven the Sebring Marching Band to several competitions throughout the state in the past two years, the most recent being last Saturday at Bradenton. We must say that it was a pleasure to have accompanied such a wonderful and talented group of young adults. They are fine ambassadors for the city of Sebring. The band director, Colorado Paniagua, is to be commended for the band's success. Getting to the state semifinals is no easy task as the competition is fierce. Her dedication and hard work is apparent. She seems to bring the best out of her students. I would also like to commend the band volunteers who work tirelessly for the students by providing meals and other support on these trips. They are admirable and deserve a big thank you from the community for their hard work. ...more

SEBRING — Time to run. The boys and girls cross country teams from the Heartland compete today and Friday in the Class 3A district meets. Avon Park and Sebring run today in the District 5 meet at Lake Park in Tampa, while Lake Placid runs on Friday at the District 6 meet in Naples. Only the top six teams advance to next Saturday's regional competition in Estero, and Avon Park's boys squad has the talent and desire to be one of those teams. ...more
