Recently, I went to Micky D's on U.S. 27 S., just south of Lakeview. Well, after I got my $2 food, I was promptly pulled over for making the right hand turn and across into the u-turn lane. Sounds okay to me, it says "right turn only" and I went right. So why did I get a $139 ticket? The officer said I was going into oncoming traffic. Huh? Not possible! I have not commented on the building of the the new proposed sheriff building. I grew up in Sebring and in 1974 began my career with the Highlands County Sheriff's Office. I learned through three sheriffs that a department works together. Now, employees must answer the phone and answer "sheriff's office" or "office of sheriff." It's just semantics to most, but it's still a loss. The public must realize that these are honorable servants (mostly.) They deserve not to be disposed of, or shoved or shuttled around. When they selected this employment or career, with conditions of danger, terrible hours, weather, pay, etc., I learned that you don't survive, you endure semantics. True, your perception is still altered. Driving by the vacated Winn- Dixie store on Kenilworth and Lakeview, I thought that it was a large building on a vast lot, located in Sebring, close to the courthouse, jail and government buildings. If the new sheriff's office is built, what effect or loss to the economy is there to the city of Sebring? ...more

SEBRING - Several Highlands County Sheriff's Office dispatchers were moved out of their second-story room in the Sheriff's Office building Tuesday evening after "an odor of smoke" began circulating around the room, Sebring Fire Chief Brad Batz said. Batz said a smoke alarm went off in the Sheriff's Office radio room as a burning electric odor spread from a utility room through the air conditioning and into the dispatcher's room. Despite the severe storm and reports of six other alarms caused by the storm in Sebring, he said he could not determine what set off the alarm. No fire or burned equipment was found. ...more

LAKE PLACID – An ownership change is in the works for the Montessori Children's School of Lake Placid, which opened in 2001. Jennifer Payne, a longtime volunteer at the school, recently became its director. "I have a contract right now to purchase the school," Payne said Monday. The school's owner, Shannon Fritzius, has been ill, according to Payne. The school will likely close under Fritzius' ownership in mid to late July and then reopen for the fall semester, she said. ...more

LAKE PLACID – RE/MAX Realty Plus II is going to be moving from its current location up U.S. 27 a bit to a standalone building in Lake Placid. The brokers and owners of RE/MAX Realty Plus and RE/MAX Realty Plus II purchased the ERA Advanced All Service Realty office in Lake Placid from broker/owner Ronnie Carter last month. It is located at the corner of U. S. 27 and Lakeview Road. The address is 801 U.S. 27 N. Laura Shirley, broker/owner of RE/MAX Realty Plus II, said the nine agents and two office staff members are expected to move into the new location by the middle of December.
