SEBRING — To citizens who have been told their votes on Tuesday won't count, vote anyway. First, the chairs of Highlands County's two political parties agree: Floridians will have a voice into who leads our nation for the next four years. Second, there's a tax cut on the Jan. 29 ballot that will decide how homeowners, mobile home owners, farmers and businesses will be taxed, affecting them all perhaps decades into the future. ...more

SEBRING — If you think this ballot is complicated, you should have seen the first one. The super exemption, passed by the Legislature in June, would have offered voters a 75 percent exemption on their homes. But a Leon County Circuit Judge declared the proposed constitutional amendment so misleading and confusing, he struck it from the Jan. 29 ballot. So, Property Appraiser Raymond McIntyre told the Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Wednesday, now Floridians will vote Jan. 29 on a completely different – if only slightly less confusing – constitutional amendment. It's got four provisions, McIntyre told the crowd, but they can't vote on them individually. ...more

As the sun rose over our beautiful Lake Placid last Sunday, everyone was there. The American Legion passing out flags in their crisp white shirts. The Greater Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce with CEO Eileen May decked out in shimmering patriotic red. Our first responders, sheriffs, police officers, firemen and women and EMTs in their starched uniforms and shiny patent leather shoes. The fire trucks, squad cars and ambulances were all clean and shiny. The musicians were well rehearsed. The speakers all had carefully, thoughtfully prepared notes and messages. The bagpiper was ready for Amazing Grace. The bugler prepared for Taps. Even Stanford from The Heron's Garden was sporting a red, white and blue tie while setting out complimentary coffee and donuts. Yes, everyone was there. Everyone but you, our community. ...more

I wish to personally say thank you to all the good citizens who took the time to come out on Sept. 9 to the Remembrance Tribute to that tragic day on 9/11 held at Heron's Garden in Lake Placid. We had a nice crowd, a little disappointing that there were not more that attended, but very appreciative of the patriotic minded folks that did come out. The speakers all were great and gave a lot of good thoughts for all of us to ponder on. How thankful we should all be for the freedom that we still have in this great land of ours. It only takes a moment in time to change things. May our nation never have to go through this type of tragedy again. There is enough turmoil in this land as it is that we can hardly control. But if we all stick together as a loving nation we can overcome all adversities in this life and work for the betterment of mankind. ...more
