My family and I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Sebring Animal Hospital. One of our dogs, Little Girl, hurt her leg to the point where she ripped through her Achilles tendon. Dr. Larry Jernigan and all the ladies at his office were so kind and understanding with our situation, that they took Little Girl under their wings and watched over her and nursed her for 38 days. Dr. Larry was so concerned that he decided to keep her there with them so that they could tend to the wound and take care of her dressing so she would heal properly without the risk of infection or more damage. We picked up Little Girl on a Saturday, but unfortunately her tendon did not adhere like we were praying. She lost the use of her hind leg, but she is doing good with her other three. ...more

SEBRING – Another national hotel chain will be adding to Highlands County's lodging inventory. The Liberty Group of Companies announced the development of a new 77-room La Quinta Inn & Suites in Sebring. The hotel will be built on U.S. 27 South next to ARS Powersports and across the street from Cafe Coffee Bean. Amenities will include an exterior pool with spa, fitness center, business center and modern décor throughout the lobby and guestrooms, according to a press release. Standard rooms will feature 32-inch flat-panel televisions, free wireless Internet, pillow-top mattresses and complimentary breakfast Ground will be broken in early 2008 on the 4.2-acre site. SEBRING — In Highlands County, six infants died in 2004, seven in 2005, and 11 in 2006. Those don't seem like high numbers, considering that 1,004 babies are born here every year. But take a second look: the number of infant deaths has almost doubled in two years, and Mary Jo Plews is troubled. Plews, executive director of Healthy Start Coalition of Hardee, Highlands and Polk counties, said a committee is still looking at individual cases in Highlands County to determine why the infant mortality rate went up so drastically. One reason, she realized, is that Highlands is a small county, so the statistics themselves are small. For instance, Lafayette County had only three infant deaths from 2004-06, but since there were only 295 live births in the same three years, the mortality rate was 11.7 percent, one of the highest in the state. ...more
