As we are well into the recession brought on by the burst "housing bubble," I have seen blame apportioned to any number of "malevolent" forces including "predatory" lenders, "greedy" developers, "unprincipled" house flippers, George W. Bush and the wicked Dick Cheney, as well as other evil or indifferent classes of fortune seekers. In a presidential election year where both sides claim to be candidates for change, there's little new in the nastiness of the campaign. Comments concerning "lipstick on a pig" are being thrown around as if one of the candidates just stated he would declare war on North Korea if elected. Imagine if a front-page article smearing your good name appeared in one of the biggest newspapers in the country. In place of proof, the newspaper substituted rumor and innuendo supplied by anonymous sources to support the outrageous allegation that you may have been unfaithful to your spouse and may have shamed the profession in which you have spent a lifetime building a reputation.
