SPRING LAKE — When is a sinkhole a blessing in disguise? When it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, but saves millions. That's what happened at the Spring Lake pump station, when 19 feet of foundation eroded over 24 years. "The sinkhole actually became a blessing for the (Spring Lake Improvement District)," said Joe DeCerbo, district manager, "because if any more land under the pipes was lost, water would have gone under the pilings and caused the entire structure to collapse, with incredible damage." ...more

SEBRING — Through a new legal firm, former Sun 'n Lake of Sebring interim general manager and planning director Michael "Mick" Grosh sought an employment settlement with the improvement district, claiming he was illegally terminated. A letter dated Jan. 21 to District Manager Al Grieshaber Jr., from the Disparti Law Group, P.A., in Holiday, Fla., indicated its willingness to settle and compromise with the district. The letter cites discrimination and violations of the Florida Civil Rights Act; deprivation of benefits pursuant to the Employee Retirement Income Security; and violation of the Florida Whistle Blower Act. It cites discrimination due to Grosh's weight as well as an attempt to smear Grosh by reporting his district cell phone as stolen. ...more

SEBRING — Sun 'n Lake of Sebring homeowners chose a new board member and then the board decided to re-examine the independent auditing process. Frank Guglielmi, SNL winter resident since 1993, and a full-timer since 1999, was the lone candidate to fill the only available position on the five-member board. SEBRING — Children and adults can now play a little less in the streets than they did at the Sun 'n Lake of Sebring Improvement District. The addition of a new eight-foot-wide concrete multi-use cart path gives bikers, joggers, walkers and golf cart drivers a safer alternative to riding in the roadway on Sun 'n Lake Boulevard. The new mile-long path starts at the snack shack for the golf club and stretches to Cortez Boulevard while running parallel to Sun 'n Lake Boulevard. Al Grieshaber Jr., SNL general manager, said preparation, which included landscape removal in a "non-functional wetlands, " plus grading and installation took about 45 days and cost $110,000. Grieshaber expects to eventually extend the path another mile west to Balboa Boulevard and connect with the main trail head of the Sun 'n Lake Preserve, an off-road biking park with several miles of single and double track trails. ...more
