The Patriot Act has circumvented our basic rights. I personally have experienced the hand of the government from the local to the federal level. I for one have worked my butt off to accomplish my goals through legal means. My own government has treated me with less respect than that afforded to illegal immigrants or newly arrived Cubans. I am waiting for them to knock my door down claiming I am a terrorist or I am plotting to overthrow. After reading the Jan. 5 article "Foreclosure Threat" by Lily Oliva of Sebring, where it was explained how cheap foreign labor was driving them out of the dry wall finishing business, I would like to make the following comments. It was never stated if the Hispanics that were sleeping 15 to a room were illegals or not. And due to the fact that no law enforcement units in Highlands County have received 287-G (ICE) training, which would allow them to enforce the existing laws that make it a crime to hire an illegal alien, we will never know. ...more
