SEBRING — Suspending impact fees is just one of the ideas Highlands County Commissioner Guy Maxcy will propose for a "stimulus package" to jump-start the county's stalled economy. Since Maxcy first proposed suspending both impact fees and building permit fees to get the struggling construction industry going again, people have been giving him additional ideas. At least four of those ideas will be added to Maxcy's plans to suspend impact and building permit fees when he officially presents his "stimulus package" to the county commission. Maxcy said Monday he will ask Edgar Stokes, the chairman of the county commissioners, to schedule his proposed stimulus package as a discussion item at the March 4 commissioners meeting. ...more

SEBRING — A low-income, senior citizen with a homestead house gets an extra tax break of $36.77 per year on property taxes under the low-income, senior exemption. That's based on Highlands County commissioners granting a $5,000 exemption under the "Save Our Seniors" tax break for low-income people age 65 and older. State law, though, allows counties to set this special exemption anywhere from zero to a maximum exemption of $50,0000 off taxable property value. At the $50,000 exemption level, the tax savings for the low-income, a senior homeowner with a homestead house would jump tenfold, up to $367.77 per year. ...more

The "Digital Age" is coming to our TV sets. Beginning in February 2009, full-power broadcast stations will transmit digital-only signals, meaning that people who get their television programming over an antenna will be out of luck. That's going to mean acquiring new technology to make the switchover, whether that requires a government-issued converter box or a new television set, purchased on your own dime. Unfortunately, Hispanics are nearly twice as likely as whites to be left without television service after the nationwide transition to digital broadcasting next year, according to a new survey. Broken down by race, 8.8 percent of whites would not be ready; 11.7 percent of Asians, 12.4 percent of blacks and 17.3 percent of Hispanics. ...more
