MELBOURNE –– One night after opening play at the West Shore Holiday tournament with a 30-point defeat, the Lake Placid boys basketball team responded in a big way on Saturday night. Sophomore Marcus Waugh had 18 points and senior Conlin Veley added 12 more as the Green Dragons picked up some momentum before district play with a 65-29 victory over Temple Christian of Titusville. WINTER HAVEN — Three Red Devils scored in double figures on Thursday night as the Avon Park girls basketball team started slow but finished strong during a 52-32 victory over Class 2A All Saints Academy. It was the Red Devils' first action since Dec. 21, though AP coach Paulette Daley said the team showed little signs of holiday rust. "We tend to start slow anyway," she said.
