SEBRING — A week after knocking off arch-rival Avon Park at Firemen's Field, the Sebring football team has a winning record in its sights as it travels to Port Charlotte at 7:30 p.m. tonight for a meeting with the Class-5A Pirates. The Blue Streaks (5-4), winners of two straight, hope to secure their third winning season in four years, a mark coach Jared Hamlin said says a lot about the direction of the program. AVON PARK — Golf is the major recreational sport in the Heartland, and with that in mind, River Greens Golf Course professional Jason Beatty has come up with a novel idea. A couples golf league. "There are a lot of leagues in the area for men and a lot of leagues for women, but I thought we would start a league that would give couples a chance to play golf together," Beatty said. "Instead of golf separating people, it would give them a chance to play their favorite sport and spend quality time with each other on and off the course." The first event is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at River Greens, with the second event slated for Dec. 8 at Placid Lakes Country Club. ...more

As capable as quarterback Jeff Garcia may seem, the Bucs can't continue to put all the pressure to move the offense on his shoulders. They need to balance out their attack and keep defenses guessing, and the way to do that is to get the running game going. Unlike years past, this is not a problem rooted in Coach Jon Gruden's desire to throw the ball or his penchant for quickly abandoning the running game. The problem is in the execution. The Bucs simply have not done a good job of consistently opening running holes for their backs. The Lions are not an easy team to move the ball against on the ground, but if the Bucs play smart and physical they can do it. ...more

THE DIFFERENCE: Running back Josh Mendez was all the offense the Gryphons would need, carrying the ball 32 times for 208 yards. He also scored Sickles' first three touchdowns of the night, as the Gryphons ground attack not only controlled the clock, but also Spoto's defensive line as well. Meanwhile, the Gryphons D would only allow the Spartans one touchdown the entire night, long after the game's outcome had been decided. ...more
