Regarding your recent article, "Nobody's Problem," like Mr. Turberville's, our neighborhood -- just a few blocks away -- is at the start of the same kind of vacant home mess. Great neighbors were more or less forced out of their meticulously-tended home due to the financial debacle of a number of banks. Sadly, this small showplace now looks exactly like nobody cares because it has joined the ranks of "Nobody's Problem." This is a very false, though catchy name. This is everybody's problem. When the undesirables pass by these homes, it is an open invitation to vandalism at the least. ...more

This letter is to alert Highlands County residents of an urgent matter, where we have to gather together and take action. Most of us are operating under sticker shock when it comes to spending our precious dollars in recent days. So many prices have gone up, we seldom really pay attention anymore, we just sigh and pay. However, we must rally the troops in this case. ...more

I am quite shocked by the fanfare that President-elect Obama has received for his plans for change. Just in the last few days the newspapers have reported the costs of these programs will be upwards of $1 trillion. After nearly eight solid years of Bush-bashing for the outgoing president's spending, how can any self-respecting adult do such an about-face and endorse expenditures of this magnitude and at such a financially insecure point in this nation's history? ...more

Yesterday, we received in our mail yet another political publication. This one, however, was from a different source, the Florida Police Benevolent Association; the one which often solicits for donations to its "causes." Its large red headline stated: "Sheriff Susan Benton Accused of …" Accused! Not convicted, not charged, accused! This country's legal system proclaims a person to be innocent until proven guilty. We were astounded that such an organization, which supposedly bases its existence on that proclamation, could so blatantly accuse one of its own as if already proven guilty. Regardless of one's political loyalties and choices, such a charge is both immature and just plain wrong. We see this piece of paper as libel. Yes, our country has freedom of speech, but libel is not freedom of speech. Acting to damage someone's reputation without proof of fault is actionable in a court of law. For shame! ...more
