SEBRING — First-term Republican Highlands County Commissioner Barbara Stewart won a second-four-year term Friday afternoon when nobody filed to run against her for the commission seat from the Avon Park district. Meanwhile, state Rep. Denise Grimsley, R- Lake Placid, will have a potentially formidable opponent in her bid for re-election. At 3:30 p.m. Friday, three and a half hours after the noon deadline for certifying candidates, the Florida Division of Elections certfified a potentially formidable independent candidate who goes straight to the November general election. ...more

SEBRING — Carl Cool ended more than six months of speculation about whether he would run for the Highlands County Commission seat held by incumbent Republican Barbara Stewart. On Tuesday, Cool, the former chief executive officer of county government for 17 years, announced that he will run for county commissioner. Both Cool and Stewart live in the Avon Park county commission district. They will have their electoral contest decided on Aug. 26, when voters pick between them in the Republican primary election. The winner then would go against a Democrat and possibly independent candidates in the November general election. Cool said he relied on close friends and prayers to make his decision to run for political office for the first time in his life. ...more

SEBRING — Possible deadlines for an elected or appointed superintendent referendum were announced Thursday night during a School Board of Highlands County workshop. The issue of changing from an elected to an appointed school superintendent has become a hot issue lately amongst parents and residents. Depending upon how the school board handles the issue, residents may have the opportunity later this year to vote on whether board members should appoint future superintendents or keep the current system, which leaves it up to the public to elect them. ...more

AVON PARK — Early voting for Avon Park's mayor and for one council seat begins Monday, making it the first time in the city's history that it is holding early voting for local offices. Voters will pick between four mayoral candidates and four contestants for Councilman Doug Eason's seat, which he is vacating. Mayor Sharon Schuler is up against RCMA Technology Director Ed Dickerson, Local Advocacy Council Chairman Gonzalo Lezama and former Mayor Gordon Marshall. ...more
