2008 Olympian Ryan Hall has come to Tampa to compete in Saturday's Publix Super Markets Gasparilla Distance Classic 15-kilometer road race. SEBRING — There is nothing like celebrating your country's birthday by getting some beneficial exercise. The 14th annual Firecracker 5k run/walk attracted 208 participants, who managed to roll out of bed in time for the 7:30 a.m. start on Friday morning at beautiful Highlands Hammock State Park. "It was an excellent day to be outside and we had a record number of people participate in this year's event," said race director Chet Brojek. SEBRING –– Proving that experience isn't everything, Sebring's Connor Bauer ran away from the competition during the recent high school cross country season. Bauer showed that his outstanding freshman year, which included qualifying for regionals, was no fluke, as the fleet-footed sophomore cruised through the district and regional meets to qualify for the state meet in Dade City. Bauer capped his remarkable season by finishing 25th at the Class 2A state meet with a time of 16 minutes, 52 seconds, which was his second-fastest time of the season. For his ability and accomplishments, Bauer has been selected Highlands Today's 2007 All-Heartland Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year. "Connor is a natural runner with a lot of ability and combines that with an outstanding work ethic," said Sebring veteran coach Jeff Shoemaker.
