EAST LAKELAND — Garrett Deross motioned to his coaches that the ball was at eye-level after taking a called third strike to end the game, but his disgusted expression told the story of the game and Sebring's tournament. Poinciana's Tony Lima hit a two-run homer to cap off a three-run third inning, as the top-seeded team eliminated Sebring with a 7-2 win in the Dixie Youth Majors "O" Zone (ages 11-12) state tournament in East Lakeland on Sunday. "That last call left a bitter taste in my mouth," said Deross of the called third strike. "We had the talent to go far in this tournament, but we just didn't get it done." ...more

On Al Chipps' day, his Schooni's Family Restaurant team squeaked out a 7-6 win over the Lake Placid Marine team in Lake Placid Senior Softball league play last Wednesday at the Lake June Ball fields. Paul Brand, Bob Fee, Jim Guild, Paul Stephenson, Bob Sheets and Ray Hensley all had two hits each. Sheets, with one out in the bottom of the seventh, got a double and was then driven in by Ray Hensley with what proved to be the winning run for the Schooni's team. Crafty Cal Bready routinely "served" the ball to an open spot over the infield for a 4 for 4 day to lead the Lake Placid Marine effort.
