AVON PARK — If Rocky Khara had a chance to avoid a playoff on Sunday, he was certainly going to take it. After finishing second in the 2006 and 2007 Bagwell Invitationals, Khara seized on his opportunity to claim top honors when he birdied his final hole to hold off Cory Meade of Haines City and win the overall championship at the 39th annual Bagwell Junior Invitational at River Greens golf course. "It's very satisfying," said Khara, 16, a recent qualifier for the upcoming Florida State Golf Association Amateur championships. "It's something I've always needed to do, and not come in second again." But it didn't come easy: Khara saw his three-stroke lead with five holes to play evaporate on a makeshift leaderboard strapped to the back of one of the dozen or so golf carts following the final group. SEBRING –– The 2008 Sertoma Junior Golf Tour will kick off with its annual adult/child tournament at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Entry fee is $75 per team, which includes 18 holes of golf, range balls, trophies and dinner. The tournament is being held at Sun 'N Lake Country Club and registration is at noon. The Sertoma Junior Tour, which is for youngsters ages 6-18, is in its 14th year and Sun 'N Lake Country Club assistant professional Andy Kesling is beginning his second year as Sertoma Tour director. "We're hoping a large number of kids come out this summer," said Kesling. "We've got a good schedule with different courses each week that will test each of the golfers skills. ...more

AVON PARK –– The talented team of Rodney and Lisa Davis won the monthly installment of the Heartland Couples Golf League on Saturday at River Greens Golf Course. The Davis duo won the Gross Division with a 78, while Ken and Michelle Koon placed second with a 79 and Keith and Pat Kincer finished third with an 80 after a match of cards. The win gave team Davis enough points to move into first place in the overall standings with 190 points in the six-month league. The Koon's are a close second in the overall standings with 185 points, while Jim and Toni Brooks are in third place at 180. ...more

SEBRING –– The second year of the Players Club Golf Tour is at hand and the first tournament of the season is set for March 15 at Sebring Golf Club. The brainchild of former Sebring Golf Club professional Tom McClurg (who left the Heartland in December to take a job as Director of Golf at Chula Vista Golf Resort in the Dells, Wis.) the Players Club Tour will be run by River Greens golf course professional Jason Beatty. "Tom started these events to give the local players a chance to compete in individual tournaments on Saturdays over the course of the year," Beatty said. "I'm looking forward to the first tournament, and I hope a lot of the local golfers take advantage of this opportunity." A $75 membership fee is required to play in the tournaments. ...more

AVON PARK –– Despite blustery conditions, Ken and Michelle Koon managed to shoot a round of 72 to finish first in the Gross Division in Saturday's Heartland Couples Golf League at River Greens Golf Course. The one-day, 18-hole tournament was the third event in the six-event schedule that runs through April, and it featured a unique format with nine holes of best ball and nine holes a scramble. Finishing second in the Gross Division was the talented duo of Ken and June Maloney with a 73, while the team of Rodney and Lisa Davis came in third with a round of 75. ...more
